PEARL, MS - The Biloxi Shuckers (51-38, 10-9 2nd half) held on for a 4-3 win over the Mississippi Braves (40-48, 7-12 2nd half) on Monday night at Trustmark Park securing the six-game series over the South Division Rivals. Trey Supak (W, 9-4) delivered another quality start on the mound while a late homer for the M-Braves squeezed the game within a run.
Biloxi etched a pair of runs in the second inning against M-Braves right-hander Claudio Custodio (L, 3-2), making his first start of the season. Jake Gatewood and Weston Wilson started the inning with singles and C.J. Hinojosa followed with a sacrifice bunt. The throw to first from Custodio deflected past the first baseman and Gatewood scored from third on the throwing error. Joantgel Segovia bounced into a double play on the next at bat and Wilson scored from third to make it 2-0. Michael O'Neill led off the third with a single and was driven in with an RBI fielder's choice from Dillon Thomas to make it 3-0.
Supak cruised with the lead and surrendered his only run in the third on an RBI groundout from Drew Waters that made it a 3-1 contest. The groundout was the second of 15 straight batters retired as Supak didn't allow a base runner from the third inning on and completed seven innings. Biloxi's starter didn't issue a walk in the game and fell one strikeout shy of tying a season high with seven strikeouts.
Weston Wilson supplied a key fourth run against Bradley Roney in the sixth inning. Thomas and Gatewood each struck out before Wilson stepped to the plate and smashed a solo home run down the left field line to make it 4-1. The homer was Wilson's 12th of the season and first since June 14th.
The Shuckers needed the insurance late as Daniel Brown (H, 7) entered from the bullpen and surrendered a two-run home run to Ryan Casteel in the eighth to cut the lead to 4-3. Marcos Diplan (S, 2) was able to halt the M-Braves rush in the ninth, walking Tyler Neslony before settling in to retire three in a row and earn his second save of the season.
The Shuckers conclude their series with the M-Braves on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 10:35 am. The Shuckers will send RHP Bowden Francis (4-6, 4.07) to the mound and Mississippi will throw LHP Kyle Muller (5-5, 3.64).
