Oviedo Sets Franchise Mark as Scrappers Roll

 (Morgantown, WV)-Luis Oviedo struck out 12 West Virginia Black Bears on Thursday night to set a new franchise single game record for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. The Scrappers scored three runs in the third and rode the arm of Oviedo to a 5-2 win.
            The Scrappers scored all they would need in the top of the third inning. Tre Gantt walked to start the inning and moved to second on Jose Fermin's single. A Tyler Freeman single would score Gantt for the lead. Mitch Reeves brought Fermin home with an RBI sac fly for a 2-0 lead. Freeman then came in to score on Elvis Perez's RBI single for the 3-0 lead.  
           Oviedo would pick up a chunk of his strikeout total over the second and third innings. He struck out six straight Black Bears starting with the final out of the second and ending with the first out of the fourth inning.
           Mahoning Valley added two insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning. Hosea Nelson's RBI groundout scored Reeves who had reached on a walk. A wild pitch would then bring Perez to the plate to push the score out to 5-1.
          The Black Bears would get a run in the bottom of the ninth on a solo homerun before the Scrappers slammed the door shut.
            Oviedo (2-0) got the win in 6.0 innings of work. He allowed an unearned run on 2 hits. Oviedo walked 1 and struck out 12. Manuel Alvarez followed with 2.0 innings of relief. Alvarez allowed 1 hit while walking 1 and striking out 3. Luis Araujo pitched the final inning. He allowed an earned run on 2 hits while striking out 1.  
             The Scrappers (10-2) look for their fifth straight series win on Friday night in West Virginia. Cameron Mingo gets the start for the Scrappers. First pitch is 7:05.
