Bulls starting pitcher Luis Pati**ñ**o set a career-high with eleven strikeouts over five shutout frames to extend his scoreless innings streak to fifteen, while three Durham batters homered as part of a five-run fourth inning in a 5-1 victory over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on Friday evening at 121 Financial Ballpark.
Pati_ñ_o (5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 11 K) finished on a high note, with each of his last nine outs being punchouts. The 11 strikeouts set a new single-game career-high for the 21-year-old, besting his previous mark of nine coming on four prior occasions. In addition to earning his third straight win, the right-hander extended his scoreless innings streak to 15.0 frames over his last three outings, with the stretch dating back to June 12.
Bulls relievers Chris Mazza (1.2 IP, 3 H, BB, 2 K), Ryan Sherriff (0.1 IP, K), Phoenix Sanders (1.0 IP, H, K) and Brent Honeywell Jr. (1.0 IP, H, R, ER, 2 K) joined forces for the final four innings to finish off the victory in support of Patino. Jumbo Shrimp southpaw Braxton Garrett (3.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 3 K), meanwhile, suffered the defeat.
Durham’s run support all came in the fourth, starting with 1B Mike Ford’s solo shot to right, his second game with a longball. Following CF Nathan Lukes’ RBI single, 3B Tristan Gray doubled the advantage to 4-0 with a two-run blast, his first big fly of the season, while C Joseph Odom capped the inning with an opposite-field solo blast to right. Ford (2-3, R, HR, RBI) was also the lone Bulls batter to post a multi-hit effort.
The two teams are slated to square off again on Saturday evening, with first pitch slated for 6:35pm ET. LHP Dietrich Enns (1-1, 3.30) is anticipated to get the nod for Durham, while Jacksonville is expected to send RHP Nick Neidert (2-0, 1.13) to the hill.
The Bulls are scheduled to return to Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Tuesday, June 29 to start a six-game series with the Gwinnett Stripers. First pitch of that game is slated for 6:35pm ET. Tickets for that game and all remaining Bulls home games are now available at durhambulls.com.
