Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots, the New York Yankees Double A affiliate will host Jackie Robinson Day on Friday April 15, as part of Major League Baseball’s commitment to celebrate the life and impact of Jackie Robinson.
Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots, the New York Yankees Double A affiliate will host Jackie Robinson Day on Friday April 15, as part of Major League Baseball’s commitment to celebrate the life and impact of Jackie Robinson.
Robinson made history on April 15, 1947 when he made his MLB debut and broke baseball’s color barrier. Jackie Robinson Day has been celebrated by baseball every year on April 15, dating back to 2004, recognizing Robinson’s life, value, and accomplishments.
As a part of the yearly tradition, each major league player and on-field personnel wears Robinson’s No. 42. No. 42 was retired throughout Major League Baseball on April 15, 1997, the 50-year anniversary of Robinson’s debut.
Robinson made his minor league debut in New Jersey on April 18, 1946 with the Montreal Royals, hitting a home run against the Jersey City Giants at Roosevelt Stadium.
Susan Wagner later sculpted a Jackie Robinson statue commemorating Robinson’s first minor league game, dedicated on February 25, 1998, which stands in front of the Journal Square Transportation Center in New Jersey.
The Patriots will join the baseball community in celebrating Robinson throughout the game.
