Pena's Seven Shutout Frames Pace Sixers Over Giants

San Jose, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino got seven shutout innings from Luis Pena in a 5-1 win on Thursday night at Municipal Stadium. The series-opening victory moved the Sixers to 5-0 at San Jose's ballpark in 2017 after having swept a four-game series in May.
The Sixers got on the board in the third when Keith Grieshaber singled to open the frame against San Jose starter Jake McCasland (5-11). Brandon Diaz, making his organizational debut, legged out an infield single with Grieshaber on the move and the runner alertly took third on the long throw attempt at first. Grieshaber then scored on a RBI fielders' choice from Brandon Sandoval for a 1-0 lead. Sandoval was singled to second by Jahmai Jones and eventually scored on a throwing error by shortstop Ryan Howard. The Sixers added three more in the fifth when Jones was hit by a pitch and then stole second. Jordan Zimmerman then legged out an infield single for a 3-0 lead as it scored Jones. Jared Walsh followed by smoking a RBI double off the wall in center making it 4-0; it was the Sixers (52-59, 22-19) only extra-base hit of the night. The Sixers capped the scoring when Walsh scored on bad-hop RBI single off the bat of Jack Kruger.
Meanwhile Pena was rolling on the mound for Inland Empire. The righty finished the night with seven scoreless frames allowing seven hits and two walks with eight Ks. Pena improved to 6-10 on the season. The Giants (49-62, 19-22) got a RBI single in the eighth from Dillon Dobson to get on the board but left the bases loaded. Jonah Arenado had three hits in the loss.
