San Antonio received a dazzling outing from righty Marcelo Perez as it evened its series against Amarillo with a 5-1 win Wednesday night at Wolff Stadium.

Mired in a lengthy offensive funk, the Chanclas were eager to break out Wednesday against Sod Squad righty Jared Lyons. Early on though, the recent theme of leaving runners on continued as San Antonio stranded multiple runners in each of the first two innings.

In the fourth, the Chanclas finally ended the drought. Lyons (0-2) retired both of the first two hitters on fly outs before allowing a Johnny Hernandez single and a Grant Smith walk. That brought up leadoff man Jalen Battles, who brought in the game’s first two runs with a double to left.

San Antonio padded the lead in the sixth, plating three more against reliever Turner Toms.

The five runs of support were more than plenty for Perez, who was once again sensational. In six shutout innings, the TCU standout allowed just four hits and two walks, while striking out a season-high eight.

Amarillo spoiled the shutout in the seventh with Jose Torres’ double off Arturo Guajardo. It would be the only blemish on the night for San Antonio, as the pitching staff continued its stellar play. Perez (1-0), Guajardo and Garrett Egli combine to rack up 14 strikeouts against just two walks in the win. The victory pulled the Chanclas within a half game of first place, trailing both Brazos Valley and Round Rock.

San Antonio (14-11) and Amarillo (16-10) conclude their three-game set Thursday on Dollar Night. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM. Southpaw Logan Garza (2-0, 3.60) will get the ball for the Chanclas in the finale, while the Sod Squad counters with righty Jake Suddreth (0-2, 6.13).
