The Reading Fightin Phils beat the Binghamton Rumble Ponies 4-1 on Friday night under the lights at Mirabito Stadium. Chris Cornelius and Dalton Guthrie both had two hit contests. Jack Conley caught a runner stealing at second and tagged another one out trying to take home. Brian Marconi recorded his 15th save to tie for first in the league.
Guthrie blasted a no-doubter to left field to put the R-Phils on the board in the third. Bryson Stott reached on a single and scored off the bat of Josh Stephen. Reading took a 2-0 lead.
Binghamton’s Luis Carpio swatted home Matt Winaker as he smoked a ball to the left field wall.
The R-Phils tacked on another in the fourth as Conley hustled home from second on an RBI single from Cornelius. Reading led 3-1.
Reading added an insurance run as Simon Muzziotti lined in Guthrie in the top of the ninth.
The R-Phils defense helped Binghamton leave 11 runners on base.
Adam Leverett threw four innings allowing five hits and just one earned run. Tyler Carr pitched a clean frame. Erubiel Armenta (W, 1-0) appeared in his first Double-A game. The lefty threw two innings letting up one hit and one walk while striking out two. Kyle Dohy had a quick 1-2-3 inning in the eighth. Marconi (S, 15) slammed the door shut in the ninth.
