Pitching, timely hitting push Memphis past Indianapolis

MEMPHIS, TN – The Memphis Redbirds extended the longest win streak of the International League season to 10 games with a 6-1 win over the Indianapolis on Wednesday afternoon at AutoZone Park.
Trailing by a run with one on and two outs in the fifth inning, third baseman Juniel Querecuto clubbed his second home run of the season to left center. The blast brings his RBI total to 14 on the season, second to Luken Baker (15).
In the sixth, Memphis took advantage of two Indianapolis errors, scoring three runs on base hits from catcher Tres Barrera and centerfielder Oscar Mercado. An inning later, right fielder Juan Yepez offered the final run of insurance with an RBI double.
Starting pitcher Connor Thomas (2-1) was tremendous in his fourth start of the season, tossing 7.0 inning for his second consecutive start. The left-handed pitcher allowed one run on six hits, walked one and struck out five batters. Thomas peppered the strike zone with his slider, getting a strike on 82 percent of his slider usage.
MLB rehabber Wilking Rodriguez tossed a scoreless inning in relief and registered a strikeout. With the win, Memphis remains atop the International League West standings.
The Redbirds (13-5) return to AutoZone Park on Friday, April 21 to take on the Indianapolis Indians at 7:05 p.m. to continue a six-game homestand.
