Riding seven quality innings from RHP Trey Supak (W, 3-1), the Biloxi Shuckers (16-16) topped the Montgomery Biscuits (19-12) 6-2 on Tuesday night at MGM Park.
Montgomery drew first blood just three batters into the game. Miles Mastrobuoni doubled and came in to score on an RBI single from Dalton Kelly two batter later. It was the first run allowed in 19.1 innings at MGM Park by Supak. The righty leveled out after that, retiring the next six batters in a row and facing the minimum until the fourth.
The Shuckers took the lead in the second. Patrick Leonard worked deep into a full count before singling to left, and Luis Aviles Jr. followed with a bunt single, putting two men on base with no outs. Dillon Thomas bounced a triple into the right field corner, driving in both runners to give the Shuckers a 2-1 advantage. Michael O'Neill then hit a single to right off of RHP Riley O'Brien (L, 0-1), putting Biloxi in front 3-1.
Pensacola drew within a run in the fourth on an RBI single from Brett Sullivan. Supak then got the first of three double plays out of his defense when David Rodríguez flew out to right and Thomas threw back in to first, doubling up Sullivan who had moved all the way to third on the pop out. Supak scattered eight hits during his seven frames, walking just one and striking out two during his outing.
Aviles supplied some breathing room for Biloxi in the fifth. After walks to C.J. Hinojosa and Leonard, the Shuckers shortstop cranked a no-doubter to left field, his first home run of the year, to put the Shuckers up 6-2.
After Supak departed, RHP Nattino Diplan entered to pitch the eighth. The righty was unable to record an out, walking the bases loaded and bringing the tying run to the plate in the form of Dalton Kelly. RHP Luke Barker (S, 1) came out of the bullpen for Biloxi and kept the Biscuits off the board, striking out two of the first three batters he faced and stranding the bases loaded. In the ninth, the righty struck out two more, tossing two perfect innings on the way to his first Double-A save.
In a quick turnaround, the Shuckers can win their series against the Biscuits on Wednesday morning at 10:35 am. Biloxi has not announced their starter, while the Biscuits will send RHP Sam McWilliams (1-0, 3.44) to the mound. It's Education Day at the ballpark.
