As the Indians’ primary catcher behind the dish this season, Carter Bins has the challenge of leading the defense and learning Indy’s pitching staff – often a revolving door of both veterans and young talent – on the fly. We sat down with the 23-year-old to talk about what it takes to be a catcher and what life is like for him off the diamond.
Where did you grow up?A: I grew up in Fairfield, California.
What is a hobby you enjoyed as a kid?A: I liked fishing – specifically, I would go fly fishing with my dad.
What’s your favorite baseball memory?A: Winning the Mountain West Conference tournament and making it to regionals during my junior year at Fresno State.
*Who was your favorite catcher to watch growing up?
*A: I grew up as a Giants fan, so I enjoyed watching Buster Posey play.
If you didn’t play professional baseball, what career path would you have taken?A: I would want to stay involved with the game of baseball and be a coach.
*Do you have any superstitions?
*A: Yes, I have a routine that I do every day that I try and stick to as best as I can. I usually eat the same meal, always shower before the game and put my catching gear on the same way each time.
*What’s your favorite part about catching?
*A: Being involved in every play of the game and knowing the impact I have on the game.
*What is the biggest challenge as a catcher?
*A: Trying to be the same guy day in and day out and keeping the same body language.
*What is something that you have learned during the season so far?
*A: Knowing that every pitch matters, and not allowing myself to take a pitch off.
