Reading's Comeback Falls Short Against Binghamton

The Reading Fightin Phils took an early lead with three runs through the first two frames. However, they gave up six runs in the top of the fifth and couldn’t recover as they fell 8-6 to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Mets).

Johan Rojas, Carlos De La Cruz and Herbert Iser each had two hits and reached base as the Fightins mounted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth. But, they fell short by two runs.

Rojas put the R-Phils on the board when he crushed a leadoff home run to center field on the second pitch of the bottom of the first inning.

Reading added two runs in the following frame. De La Cruz walked with one out. He took second on a throwing error by the pitcher and third on a balk, McCarthy Tatum reached first on a walk to put runners on the corners. De La Cruz came home and Tatum advanced to second on a wild pitch. Iser doubled to plate Tatum.

The Rumble Ponies put up six runs in the fifth to take the lead. Six singles, three walks, a wild pitch and a fielding error loaded the bases three times and gave Binghamton a three-run advantage.

In the bottom half, the Fightins got a run back. Iser doubled to lead off the frame and scored on Kevin Vicuna’s single to center field.

Binghamton responded in the seventh and eighth. Jake Mangum led off the seventh with a solo shot.

Wyatt Young singled with one out in the eighth and came home on Ronny Mauricio’s RBI single.

The Fightins staged a rally in the bottom of the ninth. Jhailyn Ortiz led off with a walk and scored on De La Cruz’s double. A wild pitch allowed De La Cruz to advance to third. After a walk to Iser, Rojas plated De La Cruz with a single. A strikeout ended the game.

Noah Skirrow started on the mound for the Figthins. He gave up five runs on five hits and struck out four through four frames. His first three innings were three up three down.

Adam Leverett pitched two innings. He allowed one run on four hits and picked up two strikeouts.

Aiden Anderson hurled the seventh inning and gave up one run on a solo shot. He also picked up a strikeout.

Jack Perkins came in for the final two frames. He allowed one run on two hits and struck out two.

The Fightins will play at FirstEnergy Stadium next on August 24 at 7:00 PM.
