Less than a week into the 2017 Minor League season, one prospect for the Red Sox departed his season debut early while another is headed back to the disabled list.
Jay Groome, Boston's No. 3 prospect, exited his start for Class A Greenville in the second inning Monday night with what the Boston Globe said was a lat injury, citing a Major League source.
One step up the organizational ladder with Class A Advanced Salem, third baseman Michael Chavis was placed on the seven-day disabled list due to an elbow injury, the Globe reported.

Facing Lexington, Groome allowed three hits -- including a grand slam -- and walked two in a five-run first inning. The first five Legends reached base against MLB.com's No. 39 prospect in the second, and Groome reportedly left with a trainer after his final pitch failed to reach home plate.

Groome threw 53 pitches, 29 for strikes. He allowed nine runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out one in the Drive's 12-4 loss.
The Red Sox selected Groome 12th overall in last season's First-Year Player Draft, a surprising slip for the lefty who had been ranked as MLB Pipeline's top talent in the 2016 class. Groome made three starts for the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Red Sox and Class A Short Season Lowell, posting a combined 2.70 ERA with 10 strikeouts, four walks and a .125 opponents' average in 6 2/3 innings.
Chavis, Boston's No. 11 prospect, isn't expected to miss much time, according to the Globe, but the injury is the latest in a brief career that has been marked by them.

Boston's 2014 first-round pick played just 81 games across two levels last year after sustaining a torn UCL in his thumb in late April. He returned on June 7, but fractured the middle finger on his right hand during infield practice two weeks later. He did not disclose the injury immediately and the numbers reflected the 21-year-old's banged-up season.
Chavis combined to compile a slash line of .244/.321/.391 with eight homers and 35 RBIs. He finished the season on the DL after telling Salem's staff about the fracture.
In one game this season, Chavis went 1-for-4 with an RBI and two strikeouts.
