Salem Offense Explodes in Middle Innings
*SALEM, VA: *The Delmarva Shorebirds (27-34) were defeated in Friday night's matchup against the Salem Red Sox (28-32) by a score of 10-6.
Isaac Bellony spotted the Shorebirds an early lead with a solo home run to start the second inning to make it 1-0. Angel Tejada elevated the lead to 2-0 with an RBI double as Adam Crampton scored on the play.
The offense stayed hot in the third as they put another run on the board thanks to Ryan Higgins who doubled home Carter Young from second base to up the advantage to 3-0.
In the fourth, Luis Gonzalez collected a double of his own to score Crampton for the second time, making it a 4-0 lead in favor of the Shorebirds. Elio Prado made it 5-0 on an RBI single to score Gonzalez from third base.
But then the Red Sox would turn the game on it's by scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on five hits, tying the game at five apiece after four frames.
Delmarva would get the lead back in the next half inning as Luis Gonzalez plated the go-ahead run in Isaac Bellony on a double-play ball to make it 6-5 Shorebirds.
It didn't take long for Salem to even the score in the bottom of the fifth as Luis Ravelo doubled to the wall to bring in Allan Castro, evening the game at six.
In the next inning, the Red Sox took their first lead of the game on an RBI double by Alexis Hernandez to make it 7-6 Salem. They'd add two more runs on a run-scoring triple by Juan Chacon, followed by a two-bagger by Cutter Coffey to score Chcacon, putting Delmarva behind 9-6 heading into the seventh.
The Shorebirds were unable to get a rally of their own going as they were shutout in the final three frames with the Red Sox putting another run on the board in the eighth to give them a 10-6 victory.
Gabriel Jackson (3-0) picked up the win in relief for the Red Sox with Darlin Alcantara (3-3) taking the loss for Delmarva. Caleb Bolden (3) was awarded the save.
The Shorebirds will look to even the series with Red Sox on Saturday night as they hand the ball to Juan Nuñez and he'll face Luis Perales for the Red Sox with first pitch at 6:05 p.m.
