ROUND ROCK, Texas – Round Rock Express 1B/RF Abimelec Ortiz was named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week for August 4-10, as announced by Minor League Baseball on Monday afternoon. Ortiz is the second member of the E-Train to earn a league honor this season.
After being promoted on August 5, Ortiz posted an impressive Triple-A debut that night in Albuquerque. The left-hander went 4-for-5 with two home runs. He totaled eight RBI in the contest, which tied the Express franchise record for most RBI in a single game.
Ortiz appeared in six games against the Isotopes, playing three at first base, two in right field and one as the designated hitter. He hit for an impressive mark of .444 (8-18) with four home runs, 13 RBI, nine runs scored and three walks.
Through 89 games with Double-A Frisco, Ortiz slashed .247/.343/.444/.787 with 19 doubles, 16 home runs, 56 RBI, 53 runs scored and 44 walks. He was tied for second in the Texas League for home runs, was tied for third in extra-base hits with 35 and was fourth in RBI prior to his promotion. In July, Ortiz was named the Texas League Player of the Month and the Texas Rangers Minor League Player of the Month.
The Bayamon, Puerto Rico native was signed as a non-drafted free agent on July 28, 2021. He made his professional debut two days later with the DSL Rangers.
The Express return to Dell Diamond tomorrow night as they open a six-game series against the Sacramento River Cats (San Francisco Giants affiliate). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT.
