Sugar Land, TX The Reno Aces (27-23, 71-54) had myriad chances to take control Saturday night but failed to break through in a 5-1 loss to the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (16-34, 49-76) at Constellation Field.

Much like Friday’s outstanding victory, Reno had an ideal situation in the top of the first inning. Jake McCarthy got on board for the seventh straight time to lead off the game with a single before Pavin Smith walked, setting the table for the heart of the order to do early damage. The Space Cowboys came out unscathed from the early test and applied the same tip toe dance through their troubles for much of the night.

The Aces had plenty of prime opportunities to post crooked numbers in four of the next five frames. None stung more than the bases loaded scoring window in the top of the fifth. Kyle Lewis dunked a single to right to finally get Reno on the board while re-loading the bags with nobody out. A strikeout and a double play snuffed out the threat, leaving the BLC Nine with just one run. Reno placed runners on first and second in the sixth, but again couldn’t find that impactful hack. The Aces went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 11 on base.

McCarthy delivered two singles and has reached in 8 of his last 10 plate appearances with six hits and two walks. Smith was an on base machine as usual with a knock and two free passes. Despite drawing five walks on top of eight singles and a double from Ali Sánchez, Reno just never found that crucial extra-base hit. Tyler Gilbert was fantastic in relief with 3.1 innings of scoreless ball and five strikeouts. Gilbert has struck out 39 in his last 29 2/3 innings for Reno.

The Aces and Space Cowboys conclude their six-game set Sunday night at 4:05 p.m. PT from Constellation Field. Reno needs a win to clinch a vital series victory.
