RENO, Nev. – For the first time in two weeks the Reno Aces will hit the road, and their second road series of the year takes place in El Paso as they take on the Chihuahuas, Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres.
Though they did not have the result they desired, winning two of six in a series loss at home to Silver State rival Las Vegas, the Aces (11-10) still had impressive contributions and memorable moments last series.
Among them were the first Triple-A home run in the first at-bat from Christian Cerda, while the duo of Ryan Waldschmidt and LuJames Groover each checked in at over .300. For Waldschmidt he was the tops at .391 (9-for-28), while Groover was just behind at .381 (8-for-27). From the mound, left-hander Mitch Bratt tossed five no-hit frames in his first of two outings. Despite Reno starters logging just a 1-1 record in the series, they posted a 4.61 ERA (14 er, 27.1 ip) for the week which ranked second in the PCL.

This week’s meeting between the Aces and Chihuahuas marks their first of 2026, and one Reno is eager for as they look to change the fortunes after going 4-8 in the 2025 season series against El Paso. Despite the tough results, Reno batted .293 (129-for-440), which ranked second against any PCL opponent in 2025. However, their production metrics were all down as their 82 runs ranked sixth, their 133 homers ranked seventh, and their 40 doubles were fifth.
It was middle of the road for Reno on the mound in 2025, as they posted a 6.25 ERA (75 er, 108.0 ip) which slotted fourth among the nine teams they faced. Additionally, their WHIP of 1.66 was fourth best, and they had their third-best walks per nine innings rate at 4.92.
The season series loss for Reno against El Paso in 2025 was their first in five seasons, as they had won each set since the start of 2021 (no season in 2020). Since the start of 2021, the Aces have logged a 29-22 record against the Chihuahuas, which is just the sixth-most wins against any opponent in that time. Though their 6.23 ERA (310 er, 448.0 ip) in that time ranks seventh of nine opponents, the hitting more than makes up for it as their .307 (569-for-1854) batting average is second in that time to only Las Vegas (.307, 1163-for-3783).
Reno holds the edge in the all-time set against El Paso, leading their 146 matchups by a 75-71 (.514) edge, with those 75 wins ranking as the seventh most in franchise history. Of opponents whom the Aces have played at least 75 times, their 5.39 ERA (765 er, 1277.2 ip) ranks seventh of 10 opponents while their .288 (1471-for-5100) batting average is the fifth best with the same criteria.
El Paso enters this series sitting with a record of 8-13 (.381), which is tied for eighth at the bottom of the PCL standings along with Salt Lake and Round Rock. Most recently the Chihuahuas split a six-game set with Round Rock, winning the first before snagging games four and five. As a team last week, the Chihuahuas batted .270 (54-for-200) with five players hitting at or above the .300 line.

Tops among them was Jose Miranda who batted .500 (6-for-12) with three runs scored, one double, one triple, one homer, and four RBI. Responsible for much of the production last week was Jase Bowen, who hit .316 (6-for-19) with five runs scored, two doubles, one triple, two homers, two RBI and four walks. Miranda is tied for the team lead in season batting average as well, clocking in at .280 (14-for-50) along with Pablo Reyes (14-for-50).

This El Paso team features just one of San Diego’s top-30 prospects per MLB Pipeline, which is right-handed pitcher Garrett Hawkins. Thus far Hawkins has made six relief appearances and has posted a 2.84 ERA (2 er, 6.1 ip), striking out six with six walks.
Among the starters, Matt Waldron has locked down his spot in the rotation as he has yet to allow a run in 12 innings across three starts, though he has yet to qualify for a win. In that time, he has struck out 12 batters to just one walk and has a WHIP of 0.67.
This series starts later tonight, with first pitch of this six-game set at Southwest University Park getting underway at 5:35 p.m. PT.
