RENO, Nev. – The Reno Aces (23-16) and Sacramento River Cats (20-19) will converge at Greater Nevada Field this week for their second six-game series.
The River Cats took four out of six in their first trip to Reno back in early April, punishing the Aces’ pitching staff en route to 63 runs. Sacramento drew 46 walks in addition to nine hit batters.
There have been some key promotions on both sides since that first meeting. Casey Schmitt, the River Cats’ qualified leader in OPS, is producing for the San Francisco Giants. Reno’s also gone through a change, as Dominic Fletcher and Emmanuel Rivera are now thriving for the Diamondbacks.
The Aces haven’t lost a series since that rough week against Sacramento, improving their command on the mound and boasting a potent offense. The River Cats have scuffled around .500 in that span with a bottom-five Triple-A OPS and a middling pitching staff.
Sacramento held Phillip Evans in check throughout that first series, a feat very few PCL clubs have been able to accomplish. Evans is the league’s leader in batting average and OPS and will be a crucial factor in the rematch.
Dominic Canzone went 9-for-21 with a double and three homers in his first look at the 2023 River Cats. Canzone is Reno’s leader in home runs (10), hitting .360 with a 1.172 OPS in 20 games at Greater Nevada Field.
Without Schmitt, Clint Coulter is the bat to monitor for Sacramento. Coulter recorded ten hits and drew five walks in the first meeting.
On the mound, Blake Walston has been one of the stingiest starters in the PCL, leading the Aces in innings (40) and ERA (2.70). Walston allowed three earned runs in his first start against Sacramento on April 13th.
Lefty Kyle Harrison, one of baseball’s best pitching prospects, leads the River Cats’ staff and owns a 3.47 ERA through eight starts. Harrison went three ⅓ innings, allowed one earned run, and struck out two in his first start against the Aces.
The series opens Tuesday at 11:05 a.m. PT from Greater Nevada Field.
