RiverDogs Best GreenJackets on Friday Night

Augusta Unable to Overcome Early Deficit

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: The Augusta GreenJackets (34-27) were defeated by the Charleston RiverDogs (41-20) for the first time this week as the visitors took game four by a score of 6-2.

The RiverDogs took their first lead of the series with a pair of runs in the opening inning starting with an RBI triple by Carson Williams to score Ryan Spikes and make it 1-0. Williams would find his way home on a sacrifice fly by Mason Auer to up the lead to 2-0.

Two more runs would come in for Charleston in the third inning on a two-run double by Nick Schnell to quickly put the GreenJackets in a 4-0 hole.

Augusta would begin a comeback effort in the bottom of the fourth as Brandol Mezquita unloaded on a pitch deep to left field and sent it over the wall for a two-run homer to trim the deficit in half to 4-2.

In the sixth, the RiverDogs were able to get one run back on a sacrifice fly from Logan Allen to plate home Kenny Piper and push the Charleston lead back to three at 5-2.

The GreenJackets best threat to storm back came in the bottom of the seventh when they loaded the bases with one out against RiverDogs' reliever Austin Vernon. But Vernon escaped major trouble by getting Geraldo Quintero to pop out into shallow right field, followed by a groundout by Brandol Mezquita to get through the inning unscathed.

The RiverDogs would keep that momentum in the next half-inning as Austin Schnell hit a long home run to straightaway center to extend the Charleston lead back to its largest of four at 6-2.

Vernon would toss perfect baseball the rest of the way for the RiverDogs to close out a game four victory for Charleston 6-2.

Antonio Jimenez (3-3) earned the win as the starter for the RiverDogs with AJ Smith-Shawver (1-4) taking the loss for Augusta. Austin Vernon was rewarded with his first save of the year.

The GreenJackets got standout performances offensively from Cal Conley who finished the night 4/4 at the plate with three singles and a double. Kadon Morton had a multi-hit game of his own with a 2/4 night while Brandol Mezquita cranked his third home run of the season in the fourth.

The GreenJackets and RiverDogs continue their series at SRP Park on Saturday at 6:05 pm with Kris Anglin taking the mound for Augusta against Christian Fernandez for Charleston.

The sixth homestand of the year for the GreenJackets continues with live music from Tom Reed on Saturday from 4:30-5:30 as part of the White Claw Pregame Concert Series before Pimento Cheese Night as the GreenJackets will wear specialty Augusta Pimento Cheese Jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game! The week concludes with father's day at the ballpark along with a Bucket Hat giveaway sponsored by Cintas for the first 1,00 fans!
