RiverDogs Walk-Off GreenJackets in Another Close Defeat

Augusta Suffers Eighth Straight Defeat

CHARLESTON, SC: Wednesday night was another tight battle between the Augusta GreenJackets (2-9) and Charleston RiverDogs (5-6) but it was Charleston escaping with another close victory as they walked off Augusta in the ninth to win 5-4.

The GreenJackets fell behind early as Willy Vasquez brought home two runs on an opening-inning double to make it 2-0 Charleston.

They'd add another run in the second on an RBI single by Ryan Spikes to jump the lead to 3-0.

That lead would be cut to one in the top of the third as the GreenJackets brought in two runs on a bases-loaded walk to Brandol Mezquita, followed by a passed the ball that scored Kadon Morton with ease from third to make it a 3-2 game.

The RiverDogs would get one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning on an error off the bat of Jelfry Marte to push the Charleston lead back to two at 4-2.

Pitching would begin to settle in the next half of the game, but Augusta was still able to make something happen in the fifth as Brandol Mezquita made it a one-run contest once again on an RBI single up the middle to score Caleb Durbin, cutting the deficit to 4-3.

Neither team would score until the ninth inning as the GreenJackets entered the frame down 4-3 but went right to work as Adam Zebrowski started the inning with a single, and then immediately moved up to second on a balk to put the tying run in scoring position. Zebrowski moved to third on a productive out by Kadon Morton to put the tying run 90 feet away. After a walk to Caleb Durbin, Cal Conley hit a slow bouncer up the middle that led to an out at second, but Conley just beat the return throw at first to bring in the tying run, evening the game at four.

Augusta did not score any more runs in the ninth as it remained tied heading into the bottom half. With runners at second and third for the RiverDogs and nobody out, Darling Florentino got the next two outs with a fielder's choice and a strikeout, but with one more out to get, Willy Vasquez ended the game with a long single to right-center that was just out of the reach of Brandol Mezquita as Charleston walked off Augusta 5-4, handing the GreenJackets their eighth straight loss.

Jack Snyder (6-0) earned the win for the RiverDogs as Darling Florentino (1-1) was saddled with the tough loss for the GreenJackets.

Rainiery Rodriguez had a notable performance out of the bullpen for Augusta dealing 4.2 innings of relief with five strikeouts, one walk, and just three hits with an unearned run scoring.

The offense was led by Brandol Mezquita who finished the night 2/2 with two singles, two walks, two RBIs, and two stolen bases as he reached in all four of his plate appearances. Adam Zebrowski and Stephen Paolini each had two hits in the game with Zebrowski also walking once and scoring a run.

Augusta will take another crack at ending their losing streak on Thursday night as they send AJ Smith-Shawver to the mound to face Daiveyon Whittle for the RiverDogs with first pitch coming from Joseph P. Riley Jr. Ballpark in Charleston at 7:05 pm.
