BURLINGTON, N.C.- The Burlington Royals were defeated by the Pulaski Yankees 4-1 in the 2017 home finale at Burlington Athletic Stadium on Monday evening.
Burlington (27-38) scored its lone run of the game in the first inning, a solo home run to right field from RF Seuly Matias . Matias hit a wind-aided ball that sailed 347 feet and over the fence for his seventh homer of the year.
Pulaski (40-24) took the lead for good in the top of the second. 3B Ricky Surum was hit by a pitch, and RF Leobaldo Cabrera followed with a single. 2B Jesus Bastidas was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and C Charles Vazquez blooped a ball into center field to allow Surum to come around to score and tie the game. After a line drive double play at first, LF Jordan Scott hit an RBI single of his own to drive in Cabrera and put Pulaski up 2-1.
The Yankees added to their lead in the fifth. SS Eduardo Torrealba hit a one-out single, and scored on an RBI double from DH Andres Chaparro . Chaparro came around soon after on a double from Surum.
Royals LHP J.C. Cloney worked four perfect innings in relief in the sixth through ninth, but the offense could not take advantage of the outing. Burlington's best shot to score late came in the seventh, when LF Reed Rohlman singled and 2B Jose Marquez drew a walk, but the Royals could not push a run across.
Rohlman finished with two hits in the loss.
The Royals will open their final series of the season on Tuesday at the Bristol Pirates. RHP Carlos Hernandez (1-4, 5.15) will start for Burlington. The game can be heard at www.bristolpiratesbaseball.com.
