Scrappers Announce 2021 Coaching Staff

NILES, OH – Joining Manager Coco Crisp for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers inaugural 2021 MLB Draft League season will be hitting coach Vic Butler, pitching coach Ron Mahay, and assistant pitching coach Craig Antush.

Ron Mahay pitched professionally from 1995 to 2010. He played for eight Major League clubs including The Boston Red Sox (1995, 1997-1998), Oakland Athletics (1999-2000), Florida Marlins (2000), Chicago Cubs (2001-2002), Texas Rangers (2003-2007), Atlanta Braves (2007), Kansas City Royals (2008-2009), and the Minnesota Twins (2009-2010). During his tenure in the MLB, he had a record of 27-12 with a 3.83 ERA and complied 470 strikeouts.

Outfielder Vic Buttler was selected in the 14th round of the 2000 amateur draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of El Camino Community College and played 10 years professionally. After a 4-game stint with the GCL Pirates, Buttler was assigned to the Williamsport Crosscutters where he played 38 games and hit .383 with 39 hits and 17 RBIs. In 2003, Buttler stole 22 of 27 bases for the Lynchburg Hillcats while hitting .285, SLG .382, and 44 RBIs. In his 8 seasons in the MiLB, Buttler played in 790 games, compiled a .278 batting average, raking in 317 RBIs, and stealing 148 bases. He was the head coach of Westchester High School from 2016-2019 and is the head coach of Cerritos College in Norwalk, California.

Antush has over 20 years of experience in collegiate athletics. He pitched two seasons of junior college baseball before transferring to the University of Alabama. In 1982, he led the Crimson Tide pitching staff in innings and in the year following won the SEC title and made it to the College World Series. Antush spent multiple years with Marshal University as an assistant pitching coach then as head coach from 1996-1997. He has spent the past 15-years as the official scorekeeper and batting practice pitcher for Mahoning Valley. He currently resides in Vienna, Ohio.
