Niles, OH- After dropping their last two games, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers came out with a vengeance Wednesday night. In the first of a three-game series, the Scrappers walloped the Frederick Keys 15-1. The offense and pitching staff were both lights out from the first pitch.
The Scrappers struck first. In the bottom of the 1st, the Scrappers loaded the bases and Trent “Buck” Anderson scored after a walk was issued to Bobby Sparling.
The 3rd and 4th innings are when the Scrappers did the majority of their damage. In the 3rd the Scrappers benefited from errors and scored four runs giving them a 5-0 lead. Two of those came from a bases-loaded double by Sparling.
In the top of the 4th, the Scrappers would more than double their lead. The Scrappers scored their first two runs of the inning after Sam Crail and Jason Hinchman, both were walked on four pitches with the bases loaded. Tommy Benson would follow the two walks with a bases-loaded double and drive in two. Ethan Kavanaugh would follow clearing the bases with a two-run single making the score 12-0 at the end of the half-inning.
Frederick would score their only run in the bottom of the 4th after Alex Ulloa drove in a run due to a Scrappers’ error.
In the top of the 8th, the Scrappers would add two more runs to their total when Anderson and Jarrod Belbin hit back-to-back RBI singles, for the final runs of the night.
The Scrapper's pitching was strong, only allowing one run and three hits as a unit. Starter Collin Floyd went four allowing two hits, two walks, seven strikeouts and an earned run. Jimmy Burnette stood out as well with a dominant two innings allowing no hits, no runs, one walk and five strikeouts.
While they benefited from Frederick’s five errors, the Scrapper's offense got back on track with nine hits. Sparling and Anderson led the way in the hit department. Sparling went 2-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored, and one walk. Anderson went 2-2 with an RBI, three runs scored, and four walks.
