(State College, PA)-It is said that all good things must come to an end. That saying held true on Wednesday night in State College. The State College Spikes got three runs in the first inning and held on to top the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 4-1. The loss snapped the Scrappers 5-0 start to the season.
State College would get on the board in the first inning thanks to a mistake by Scrappers starter Juan Mota. With no outs and runners at first and third, Mota was called for a balk allowing the first run of the game to score. Wood Myers then doubled to drive home Justin Toerner for a 2-0 lead. An RBI single from Andres Luna pushed the first inning lead out to 3-0.
Mahoning Valley would get their lone run in the top of the seventh inning. Angel Lopez was hit by a pitch to start the inning. With one out, Jose Fermin doubled to drive home Lopez to cut the deficit to 3-1.
State College would tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to push the score out to the final of 4-3.
Mota (0-1) started and took the loss. He went 4.2 innings, allowing 3 earned runs. Mota struck out 5 without allowing a walk. Randy Valladares followed with 1.2 innings of relief. Valladares 1 earned run on 3 hits. He walked 1 and struck out 3. Luis Santos went the final 1.2 innings. He did not allow a baserunner as he struck out 2.
The Scrappers (5-1) now return home to start a six game home stand starting at 7:05 on Thursday night against the Auburn Doubledays. Luis Ovied will get the start for Mahoning Valley.
