Auburn, NY- After falling behind early, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers used two Auburn Doubledays' errors to take a lead they wouldn't give up. Two errors and two runs in the top of the third inning propelled the Scrappers to a 3-1 win on Thursday night.
Auburn would take the first lead of the game in the bottom of the second inning. With one out Omar Meregildo was hit by a pitch. He then moved to second on an Armond Upshaw single. Meregildo would come in to score the first run of the game on Josual Ramirez's RBI single.
It took no time at all for Mahoning Valley to take the lead right back. Dillon Persinger started the top of the third inning with a single. Jesse Berardi then reached on a fielding error by Joshual Ramirez at second. With runners at first and second, Samad Taylor singled to load the bases. Nolan Jones followed with an RBI single under the glove of Ramirez at second to tie the game. With the bases still loaded, Austen Wade gave the Scrappers the lead with and RBI fielder's choice to score Taylor.
The Scrappers would add an insurance run in the top of the fourth inning, once again taking advantage of an Auburn error. With one out, Will Benson singled. Simeon Lucas followed and hit a hard groundball at Ramirez at second. The ball ricocheted off the knee of Ramirez and rolled down the rightfield line allowing Benson to score all the way from first to push the Scrappers lead out to the final of 3-1.
Gregori Vasquez and the bullpen would make the two run lead stand up.
Vasquez (1-1) picked up the win in 5.1 innings of work. He allowed just one earned run while scattering five hits. Vasquez walked one and struck out four. Jonathan Teaney earned a hold with 2.2 innings of relief work. Teaney allowed a hit and walked one while striking out three. Cesar Ventura (3) picked up the save with a scoreless inning of relief.
