Scrappers Take Advantage of Error to Top West Virginia

Morgantown, WV- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers topped the West Virginia Black Bears 2-1 on Saturday night in game one of a three game series. The Scrappers scored both runs thanks to an error in the top of the third inning and used more outstanding pitching to move back to within a game of the Pinckey Division lead.       
            With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the third inning, Ulysses Cantu hit a hard ground ball at Black Bears' short stop Robbie Glendinning. Glendinning had the ball kick off his glove and into the outfield allowing two runs to score.
            West Virginia would get their only run in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Brett Pope doubled. Pope would come around to score on an RBI single by Chris Sharpe.
            Kirk McCarty started and took a no decision 3.0 innings. He allowed just three hits and struck out three. James Karinchak (1-2) earned his first professional win in 2.2 innings of relief work. He allowed one earned run on three hits while striking out seven. Zach Draper followed with 1.0 inning of relief. He allowed one hit and walked one while striking out one. Jean Carlos Mejía (1) earned the save in 2.1 innings of work. Mejia allowed one hit and struck out four.
            The Scrappers will look to move back into a tie atop the Pinckey Division when they continue their series with the Black Bears on Sunday afternoon. Eli Morgan will start for Mahoning Valley. First pitch is set for 4:05. The Scrappers return home on Tuesday night to host Batavia.
