The Biloxi Shuckers (34-24) bullpen held firm on Tuesday night at Trustmark Park, preserving a one-run lead and sealing a series-clinching 4-3 victory over the Mississippi Braves (25-31). The offense cut loose with four quick runs early in the game and led wire-to-wire, improving Biloxi to a season-best mark of ten games over .500.
Patrick Leonard plated the first run of a three-run first inning against Jasseel De La Cruz (L, 1-2), tripling to right field and scoring Trent Grisham to make it 1-0. With two-outs, De La Cruz allowed the inning to continue with a walk to Dillon Thomas followed by a plunking of Joantgel Segovia. C.J. Hinojosa then delivered the multi-run swing with a single into right field, scoring both runners and boosting the Shuckers lead to 3-0.
The final run of the game for Biloxi came in the second inning as Jake Gatewood poked a single into center to score Luis Aviles Jr. and grab a 4-0 advantage. Trey Supak (W, 7-2) held the M-Braves scoreless over the first chunk of his start, stranding the bases loaded in the second and picking off Drew Waters aboard first to face the minimum in the third. Daniel Lockhart tagged Supak for a run in the fourth with an RBI-single, ending a stretch of 23.0 consecutive scoreless for Biloxi's ace.
Christan Pache connected for a solo home run to left field in the fifth and Riley Unroe added in the inning with an RBI double to cut it to a slim 4-3 contest. Devin Williams (H, 1) replaced Supak on the mound in the sixth and spearheaded a preservation effort from the bullpen. Williams worked a 4-6-3 double play in the sixth and face just three hitters in the seventh after Max McDowell snapped Pache out at first while off the bag.
Still leading 4-3 in the eighth, Aaron Kurcz (H, 4) continued the line with a 1-2-3 inning and Luke Barker (S,7) entered in the ninth, sealing the game for a second straight night and grabbing the save. With the win, the Shuckers remain in a first-place tie in the South Division with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.
The Shuckers continue their series with the M-Braves on Wednesday with a 6:35 pm first pitch. Biloxi will send RHP Drew Rasmussen (0-0, 2.65) to the mound and Mississippi will throw RHP Ian Anderson (2-4, 3.27).
