The Biloxi Shuckers (12-7) put up seven runs in the fourth inning on their way to a 9-5 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits (6-13) on Tuesday night. RHP Adrian Houser and LHP Kodi Medeiros (W, 2-0) each provided four solid innings on the mound in the winning effort.
The Biscuits jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first, plating three runs on three hits and a walk against the starter Houser. Nathan Lukes' ground-rule double capped the frame, but Houser settled in and found a groove soon after. Following the double, the righty set down the final ten batters he faced, totaling five strikeouts on the night.
The Shuckers scored their first run in the bottom of the first when Blake Allemand singled in Jake Hager, the first of his three hits. With runners at first and third and Jake Gatewood at the plate, Allemand was caught between first and second after a would-be wild pitch. He was tagged out to end the inning with the Shuckers trailing 3-1.
Gatewood and Allemand would have another opportunity later in the contest. The pair found themselves in the same situation, runners at the corners and Gatewood batting, in the bottom of the fourth. This time, Biloxi's hottest hitter scalded a single back up the middle to start the big inning.
The Shuckers added two more runs to starter RHP Eduar Lopez's (L, 1-2) stat line before he was replaced by LHP Austin Wright. Dylan Moore picked up a run-scoring single to tie the game, and Clint Coulter gave Biloxi the lead on a sacrifice fly. After Wright entered, he walked Corey Ray to load the bases for Troy Stokes Jr. The Shuckers' left fielder broke the game open with a bases-clearing double down the left field line to make it a 7-4 contest. Stokes Jr. would later score on a passed ball to complete the Shuckers' highest scoring inning of the season.
Following the frame, Medeiros churned out his innings in relief, striking out five over four strong. His lone runs allowed came on a two-out two-run double in the eighth by Brandon Lowe. RHP Jon Olczak provided a perfect ninth to set up the rubber match tomorrow morning.
RHP Thomas Jankins (3-0, 2.41) steps to the mound for the Shuckers and faces Montgomery's RHP Benton Moss (1-1, 3.24) on Education Day with first pitch at 10:35 AM CT. Tickets are available for the Community Bank Terrace that include a hot dog, chips and a drink for just $10.
