Fredericksburg Comes Back Late to Stun Delmarva in Series Opener
SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (42-79, 19-36) began their final homestand with a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to the Fredericksburg Nationals (71-49, 25-29) in ten innings.
The Shorebirds struck first in the opening inning on a sacrifice fly by Eric Booth Jr., scoring Ty Head, who led off the inning with a triple.
With the score still 1-0 in the third, Eric Booth Jr. added a second RBI with a run-scoring groundout as Félix Amparo scored to make it 2-0. One batter later, Stiven Martinez (13) made it 4-0 with a 421-foot blast to center field, homering for the second consecutive game.
Fredericksburg quickly came back with their best inning in the top of the fourth, using a two-run double by Kevin Made and an RBI double by Avery Ortiz to cut Delmarva's lead to 4-3.
In the ninth, with the Shorebirds still ahead 4-3 and three outs from victory, Dashyll Tejeda (4) tied the game with a solo home run, making it 4-4.
In the top of the tenth, the Fred Nats took the lead on an RBI single by Manuel Cabrera, who entered as a pinch-hitter, giving Fredericksburg their first lead at 5-4.
Delmarva quickly put the pressure on the Fred Nats in the bottom half, loading the bases with nobody out, but Adam Boucher struck out the next two batters, and then Jimmy Anderson lined out to center to end the game, handing the Shorebirds a tough 5-4 loss in ten innings.
Zack Konstantinovsky (1-0) earned the win in his professional debut, while Javier González (0-1) took the loss. Adam Boucher (2) recorded the final three outs in the tenth to pick up the save.
Delmarva looks to bounce back on Wednesday, with Harrison Kreiling taking the mound against Juan Reyes for Fredericksburg. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
