Four-Run Second Inning Pushes Salem to Victory
SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (17-25) fell in the series opener to the Salem Red Sox (19-24) on Tuesday night by a score of 6-2.
After a scoreless first, the Red Sox took the lead in the second by scoring four runs, starting with an RBI single by Marvin Alcantara with the bases loaded to make it 1-0. With the bases still full of Red Sox, Lyonell James scored two with a base hit of his own to up the Salem lead to 3-0. They then produced one last run on a wild pitch as Alcantara scored from third to give Salem a 4-0 advantage.
Delmarva would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the third as Jalen Vasquez scored on a wild pitch, trimming the deficit to 4-1.
Vasquez would put himself aboard again in the fifth and work his way to third where he scored on an infield single by Enrique Bradfield Jr., pulling the Shorebirds within a pair at 4-2.
The Red Sox would score a key unearned run in the seventh to go back up by three at 5-2. They'd score one last run in the ninth on an RBI single by Alexis Hernandez to cap off a 6-2 win for Salem in the series opener.
Both starters factored into the final decision as Jose Ramirez (3-8) earned the win for the Red Sox with Edgar Portes (5-6) taking the loss for the Shorebirds. Jonathan Brand (8) earned the save by recording the final six outs.
Enrique Bradfield Jr. and Jalen Vasquez each finished with two hits on Tuesday with Vasquez scoring both Delmarva runs. Bradfield stole two more bases and is now 10/10 on steals in five games with Delmarva.
The series continues on Wednesday night as Juan Rojas draws the start for Delmarva against Elvis Soto for the Red Sox with first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
