Two Home Runs from Basallo Not Enough in Loss to GreenJackets
*SALISBURY, MD: *The Delmarva Shorebirds (0-1) fell just short in the first game of the second half as they were defeated 3-2 by the Augusta GreenJackets (1-0) on Friday night.
Samuel Basallo quickly got things started for the 'Birds as he hit a home run over the right field wall in the first inning to make it 1-0 Delmarva.
The GreenJackets answered with three runs in the top of the fourth. E.J. Expositio tied the game with an RBi single, Jeremey Celedonio gave Augusta a 2-1 lead with an RBI groundout, followed by an infield hit by Nick Clarno that created a throwing error, extending the GreenJackets' advantage to 3-1.
Samuel Basallo would strike again in the bottom of the sixth as he crushed a 431-foot home run over the wall in right-center to pull the Shorebirds within one at 3-2, the second multi-homer game of his career.
But the story was Augusta starter Owen Murphy, as the first-round pick by Atlanta from 2022 spun a gem for the GreenJackets by striking out 12 across 5.2 innings with no walks.
Delmarva's best opportunity to get back in it was in the seventh when they put the first two batters on with nobody out, but a double play ball and an infield popup prevented the Shorebirds from scoring.
Greg Cullen started the bottom of the ninth for the Shorebirds with a double, but Delmarva was unable to advance him and the GreenJackets would hold on for a 3-2 win.
Owen Murphy (2-2) picked up the win for Augusta with Bradley Brehmer (2-2) being the losing pitcher for Delmarva. Chad Bryant (1) earned the save.
The Shorebirds will look to earn their first second-half win on Saturday night as 2022, 11th-round pick Zack Showalter is slated to make his Delmarva debut against Spencer Schwellenbach for the GreenJackets with first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
