Delmarva Unravels in Ninth-Inning Comeback by Hickory
SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (36-66, 13-23) suffered a heartbreaking 16-11 defeat to the Hickory Crawdads (60-39, 26-9) on Sunday.
After being shut out on Saturday, Delmarva quickly took the lead in the bottom of the first with back-to-back two-out RBI singles by Miguel Rodriguez and Luis Almeyda, going in front 2-0.
Stiven Martinez doubled the lead to 4-0 with a two-run single in the second, scoring Hector Campusano and Junior Aybar.
The Crawdads came back quickly in the third, scoring three runs on an RBI single by Marco Argudin and a two-run single by Paulino Santana, making it a 4-3 game.
They tied the game in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk with Sebastian Baquera at the plate.
Delmarva reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI groundout by Stiven Martinez, who scored Hector Campusano and gave the Shorebirds a 5-4 advantage.
In the fifth, Hickory went back in front with an RBI double by Pablo Guerrero and a successful squeeze bunt from Luis Marquez, putting the Crawdads in the lead, 6-5.
The Shorebirds tied the game when a wild pitch allowed Andrew Tess to cross home plate, making it 6-6.
In the next inning, the Crawdads took the lead on an unearned run, but Delmarva came back to tie the score at seven with an RBI triple from Junior Aybar.
Delmarva took the lead in the seventh on an RBI single by Jemone Nuel, followed by a two-run single by Jaiden Lo Re, putting them ahead 10-7.
A sacrifice fly by Miguel Rodriguez in the eighth made it an 11-7 game.
However, the game spiraled for the Shorebirds in the ninth. After three straight walks to start the inning, Deward Tovar drove home two runs with a single, making it 11-9. With one out to get and the tying runs in scoring position, Sebastian Baquera grounded to third, but a bad throw by Elvin Garcia led to an error that allowed the tying run to score, evening the game at 11. The Crawdads capitalized on that costly error, taking the lead on a two-run triple by Marco Argudin. A three-run homer by Pablo Guerrero (4) suddenly put the Shorebirds behind 16-11.
The nine-run ninth inning proved enough, as the Shorebirds did not score in the bottom half, and the Crawdads would steal the finale by a 16-11 final score.
