Pair of Five-Run Innings Fuels Delmarva in Series Opener

SALEM, VA: The Delmarva Shorebirds (26-31) started a seven-game series with the Salem Red Sox (25-31) with a convincing 10-2 victory on Tuesday afternoon.

After a scoreless first two innings, the Shorebirds got on the board in a big way in the third. With the bases loaded, Samuel Basallo drew a walk to give Delmarva a 1-0 lead. Minor League rehabber, Ryan Higgins, then ballooned the lead to 4-0 on a bases-clearing double to the wall in left-center. Isaac Bellony finished the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Higgins from third, making it 5-0 Shorebirds after three.

The offense delivered another five-run frame in the fifth, starting with a wild pitch with the bases loaded as Carter Young scored on the play. Adam Retzbach then brought one home on a groundout to first to push the advantage to 7-0. After another wild pitch scored a run, Noelberth Romero knocked a two-run homer over the wall in left for his first home run of the season to put the Shorebirds way ahead 10-0.

Delmarva also got great pitching, led by starter Alfred Vega who tossed four innings of scoreless baseball to make it five consecutive scoreless outings, covering 18.1 innings.

Alejandro Mendez threw a scoreless fifth with Moises Chace taking over the sixth, he would go on finish the game for the Shorebirds by picking up five strikeouts with his only blemish being a two-run homer by Lyonell James in the seventh, but Delmarva would still go on to win handily by a score of 10-2.

Alejandro Mendez (2-0) was awarded the win with Moises Chace (1) picking up his first save. Salem starter Noah Dean (1-3) was the losing pitcher.

The strong day for the offense was led by Noelberth Romero who reach in all four plate appearances including a two-run homer and single. Carter Young also reached four times with two hits and two walks and Ryan Higgins played well in his first rehab start as his bases-clearing double was the most impactful swing of the game.

Delmarva will get set to play two games tomorrow starting at 5:35 p.m. Wyatt Cheney will start game one for the Shorebirds with Jared Beck getting the ball for game two which will come 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first matchup.
