SALEM, VA: The Delmarva Shorebirds (0-1) were defeated by the Salem RidgeYaks (1-0) on opening night, 5-4.

The RidgeYaks scored first in the bottom half of the opening inning when a double play by Skylar King scored Starlyn Nunez, making it 1-0 Salem.

Their lead grew to 4-0 in the third inning after an RBI single by Enddy Azocar and a two-run double by Skylar King.

King delivered another run for the Yaks with his second double of the night in the fifth inning, and an error on the play allowed Luke Heyman to score, increasing their lead to 5-0.

Delmarva's offense struggled against Salem starter Dylan Brown, who allowed only two base runners and no runs in five innings.

The Shorebirds produced their first run of the year in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Cobb Hightower to score Félix Amparo, making it 5-1.

In the eighth, Delmarva kept its rally going by scoring twice. First, a sacrifice fly by Braylon Whitaker made it 5-2. Cobb Hightower followed with his third hit of the night to drive in his second run, narrowing the gap to 5-3.

Maikol Hernandez made it a one-run game in the ninth with an RBI single to score Junior Aybar, but Delmarva left the tying run at first and fell short, 5-4.

Dylan Brown (1-0) earned the win for Salem, while Kiefer Lord (0-1) took the loss for Delmarva.

The Shorebirds will try to even the series on Friday as Denton Biller takes the mound against Madinson Fernandez for the RidgeYaks. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
