Delmarva's Offense Held to Five Hits in Defeat
KANNAPOLIS: The Delmarva Shorebirds (44-85, 21-42) were shut out by the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (69-60, 36-27) on Thursday, 13-0.
The Cannon Ballers scored first in the second on a successful first-and-third steal, with Clay Burdette scoring. Landon Hodge then singled home Jake Berkland, giving Kannapolis a 2-0 lead.
The deficit grew to 4-0 in the third after back-to-back extra-base hits with two outs by Grayson Fitzwater and Alexander Albertus, giving the Cannon Ballers a 4-0 edge.
In the sixth, Kannapolis scored two unearned runs on a fielder's choice and an RBI single by Landon Hodge, extending their lead to 6-0.
An RBI single by Abraham Nunez in the seventh pushed Kannapolis' lead to 7-0.
The Cannon Ballers broke the game open for good in the eighth with six runs, taking a 13-0 lead, and they'd win by that final score, completing a shutout victory over the Shorebirds.
Gabe Tanner (5-5) earned the win as Kannapolis's starter, while Brayan Orrantia (1-9) took the loss for Delmarva.
The Shorebirds try to return to the win column on Friday, as Braden Smith makes his first professional start against Fabian Ysalla for the Cannon Ballers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
