Shorebirds Suffer Third Straight Loss to Crawdads
Delmarva Strands Ten Runners On Base in Defeat
HICKORY, NC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (42-77, 19-34) were defeated by the Hickory Crawdads (70-46, 36-16) on Saturday, 7-2.
After neither team scored in the first three innings, Shorebirds struck first on an RBI single by Miguel Rodriguez, putting Delmarva ahead 1-0 and ending a 13-inning scoreless drought against Hickory pitching.
The Crawdads quickly came back and took the lead on a two-run single by Paulino Santana, followed by a wild pitch that plated a third run, giving Hickory a 3-1 advantage.
Delmarva chipped away at that deficit by scoring once in the sixth on an RBI single on an RBI single by Adriander Mejia to make it a 3-2 game.
In the next half-inning, the Crawdads manufactured an unearned run after a two-out error as a run-scoring single by Josh Springer put Hickory back up two at 4-2.
Hickory eventually broke the game open in the eighth with a three-run homer by Deward Tovar (16), giving the Crawdads their largest lead at 7-2.
The Shorebirds were unable to come back, finishing the night 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranding ten runners on base in a 7-2 defeat.
Brandon Jaenke (1-0) was the winning relief pitcher for Hickory, while Brayan Orrantia (1-7) took the loss for Delmarva despite throwing five strong innings for the second appearance.
The series with the Crawdads wraps up on Sunday with Collin McKinney making his professional debut against Josh Owens for Hickory. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
