Ty Head's First Career Home Run Helps Delmarva Win the Finale
SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (41-73, 18-30) defeated the Salem RidgeYaks (49-63, 24-23) 8-5 in Sunday's series finale.
The RidgeYaks scored the first run of the night on an RBI double by Josue Brito in the opening inning to make it 1-0.
Delmarva came back in the next half-inning with two runs on a sacrifice fly from Jimmy Anderson to score Eric Booth Jr. Jemone Nuel then singled home Stiven Martinez to give the Shorebirds a 2-1 advantage.
In the top of the third, a balk with the bases loaded tied the game at two.
Stiven Martinez (10) put the Shorebirds back in the lead with a solo home run, his team-best tenth homer of the season, making it a 3-2 game.
Salem had the answer in the bottom of the third when a balk with the bases loaded allowed Franklin Primera to score, evening the game at three.
Delmarva quickly went back in front thanks to Ty Head (1), who launched his first professional home run. His three-run shot off the bat at 105 mph put the Shorebirds ahead 6-3.
Ty Head helped Delmarva extend their lead, scoring on a wild pitch in the sixth to give the Shorebirds their largest advantage at 7-3.
An inning later, Kleyver Salazar (10) went deep with a two-run homer, cutting Delmarva's lead in half to 7-5.
The Shorebirds manufactured an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as a groundout by Eric Booth Jr. scored Ty Head to put Delmarva up three, 8-5, entering the final inning.
Brendan Parks recorded the final three outs in order in a perfect ninth inning to secure a series win for the Shorebirds, who took the finale 8-5 over the RidgeYaks.
Kailen Hamson (5-4) was the winning reliever for Delmarva, with Brendan Parks (1) notching his first save. Jose Bello (2-5) took the loss for Salem.
The Shorebirds return to action on Tuesday as they travel to face the Hickory Crawdads, with the opening pitch of the first game scheduled for 7:00 PM.
