BILOXI, MS – The Biloxi Shuckers (57-61, 22-31) made some history in their 4-3 victory over the Knoxville Smokies (65-56, 27-25) at Keesler Federal Park on Wednesday night. To begin, the Biloxi starter Manuel Rodriguez (5.0ip, 4k) secured his franchise single season record-tying 12th win and became the youngest Brewers Double-A pitcher to 100 strikeouts since Nick Neugebauer with the Huntsville Stars in 2001.
On the hitting side, Andrew Fischer slugged his 39th home run of the season in the first inning, off the bat at 100 mph, traveling 312 feet. Fischer’s 39 long bombs lead Minor League Baseball. The former first round pick is chasing the first 40 home run season by a Brewers Minor League Player since 1974 and could become the first Brewers Minor League player to lead MiLB in homers since 1978.
Jesús Made also drove in two runs, putting him in sole possession of third all-time for RBIs in a single season by a Shucker, with his 81st and 82nd runs driven home. The current single-season record is 89 set by Jackson Chourio in 2023.
Then on the basepaths, Dylan O’Rae swiped his 52nd stolen base of the season in the fifth frame, which tied him with Johnny Davis (2017) for the Shuckers franchise single-season record.
The Smokies got the scoring started in the first when Miguel Useche came home on an error. In the home half, Jesús Made tied the game just three pitches into the inning on an RBI double. Fischer plated Made with his aforementioned 29th home run to make it 3-1. Knoxville deadlocked the contest at three in the fourth on a run-scoring groundout by Carter Trice and an RBI single by Alex Madera. Made drove in his second run of the game in the fifth to give Biloxi it would never relinquish.
Andrew Fischer’s (1-for-4) homer helped him lock up his 11th multi-RBI contest of the season, while Dylan O’Rae (2-for-3) and Luis Peña (2-for-4) each picked multiple hits on the evening as well. Peña has at least one hit in each of his eight games as a Shucker.
Manuel Rodriguez (12-4) was tagged with his record-setting 12th win, while Brody McCullough took the loss, and Jack Seppings (2.1ip, 0r) secured his first save at the Double-A level. He’s the 14th different Shuckers player to record a save for the squad this season. Ryan Birchard (1.2ip, 3k) also posted a zero as a reliever in the Biloxi bullpen.
The Shuckers get set for game three of the series against the Smokies at Keesler Federal Park on a jam-packed promotion Thursday. Bishop Letson (5-6, 5.38) toes the bump for Biloxi, with Jake Knapp (0-1, 4.44) getting the nod for Knoxville.
