In a game that was close throughout, the Biloxi Shuckers (49-49, 15-16 2nd Half) used a four-run ninth inning to pull away in a 7-2 victory over the Mississippi Braves (47-53, 18-13 2nd Half) on Friday night at Trustmark Park.

A home run helped the Shuckers take the lead in the first as Andruw Monasterio connected for a solo blast off RHP Alan Rangel (L, 4-5), putting Biloxi up 1-0. Thomas Dillard then doubled to lead off the second and came in to score on a single up the middle by Terence Doston, widening the Biloxi lead to 2-0.

RHP Carlos Luna allowed just three base runners through his first three innings of work but allowed a two-run homer to Drew Lugbauer in the fourth that tied the game at 2-2.

Biloxi’s offense struck back immediately in the top of the fifth. Garrett Whitley worked a lead-off walk and then stole second and third base with no outs in the frame. A sacrifice fly by Cam Devanney scored Whitley easily, putting the Shuckers back ahead 3-2.

RHP Harold Chirino (W, 3-2) spun a scoreless frame in the fifth, striking out one before handing it over to RHP Noah Zavolas (S, 2). Zavolas scattered a hit and a walk over his first three innings of work out of the bullpen, maintaining the Shuckers’ one-run lead.

In the top of the ninth inning, Corey Ray walked to open the frame and Monasterio followed with a hustle double to center, putting men on second and third with no outs. Tristen Lutz lashed a single to right, driving in both runners to give Biloxi some breathing room at 5-2. Felix Valerio came in as a pinch runner for Lutz, and after a Devanney walk, Thomas Dillard mashed a triple to the right-field gap, scoring both runners to put the Shuckers up 7-2. Zavolas allowed a pair of singles in the ninth but polished off his outing with a flyout, part of an evening in which he spun four scoreless innings and struck out four while allowing just three total hits.

Seeking to claim a series win, Biloxi continues their six-game tangle with the Mississippi Braves on Saturday night. LHP Robert Gasser (NR) is set to make his Double-A debut with Biloxi while the M-Braves will counter with LHP Dylan Dodd (0-1, 4.91) for a 6:35 pm first pitch.
