The Biloxi Shuckers (65-45, 24-16 2nd Half) were shutout by the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (52-58, 23-17) in a 4-0 defeat on Thursday night at MGM Park. Biloxi maintains a one-game lead over the Jumbo Shrimp in the second half South Division standings despite the loss.
The Shuckers had a few early scoring opportunities against Jumbo Shrimp LHP Daniel Castano (W, 4-1), getting a lead-off single from Joangtel Segovia in the first and a one-out double from Jake Gatewood in the second. However, the Shuckers offense couldn't string together hits against Castano, who scattered four hits over seven scoreless innings.
On the hill for Biloxi, RHP Bowden Francis (L, 5-7) went on a strikeout run in the third and fourth inning, recording seven consecutive outs via the strikeout. The righty ran into trouble in the fifth when Castano doubled with one out and Jazz Chisholm tripled to center, plating Castano to put the Jumbo Shrimp up 1-0. Lewin Diaz followed with an opposite-field homer to left, his first with Jacksonville and seventh in the Southern League this season, to expand the Jumbo Shrimp lead to 3-0.
Chisholm added to the Jacksonville lead in the seventh with a two-out homer to right, his first in the Marlins organization and 19th in Southern League this season, to put the Jumbo Shrimp in front 4-0. RHP Vincenzo Aiello allowed just a single in his one inning of scoreless relief for the Jumbo Shrimp and RHP Tommy Eveld pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to complete the shutout.
Biloxi continues their five-game series with the Jumbo Shrimp on Friday night at 6:35 pm at MGM Park. The Shuckers are scheduled to send LHP Cameron Roegner (3-4, 4.79) to the mound opposite major-league rehabber RHP Pablo López (0-1, 21.60). It's Egg Bowl Night at the ballpark, where the Shuckers celebrate the great rivalry between Ole Miss and Mississippi State. The Shuckers will be raffling off two different pairs of tickets to the Egg Bowl, and fans can also enter a raffle to win an autographed baseball from Ethan Small, the 2019 SEC Pitcher of the Year with Mississippi State and 2019 first-round selection by the Brewers. Plus, enjoy postgame fireworks! The game can be heard locally in Biloxi on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/100.9 FM, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App and can be seen on MiLB.TV.
