Shuckers Walk Off Smokies with Three-Run Ninth Inning

BILOXI, MS – With a mad dash from Braylon Payne from second on an errant throw to the plate, the Biloxi Shuckers (59-62, 24-32) earned a 4-3, walk-off win over the Knoxville Smokies (66-58, 28-27) at Keesler Federal Park on Saturday night. With the win, the Shuckers secured a series split, with a chance to earn their 11th series win of the season in the series finale on Sunday. Travis Smith and Garrett Hodges helped the Shuckers to a win and allowed one run across 4.2 relief innings. Across the last four games, the Shuckers bullpen has allowed one earned run across 15.0 innings.

The Shuckers fell behind in the first with an RBI groundout from Miguel Useche, scoring Alex Ramírez from third, but a Josh Adamczewski single in the third tied the game at one. Miguel Useche made it 2-1in the fifth with an RBI double, and the Smokies made it 3-1 in the eighth with an RBI single to right from Edgar Alvarez. In the ninth, Damon Keith pulled the Shuckers within one with an RBI single to short, scoring Andrew Fischer from third. Matthew Wood, the next batter up, then rolled a groundball to first. Miguel Uscheche touched the first-base bag and came home for a tag attempt, but the throw skipped off the catcher, allowing Luis Peña and Braylon Payne to score on the play and giving the Shuckers their fifth walk-off win of the season. Garrett Hodges (1-0) earned the win while Vince Reilly (2-2) took the loss after his first blown save of the season.

At the plate, Damon Keith (2-for-4) was the lone Shuckers hitter to record a multi-hit performance while Luis Peña extended his on-base streak to 11 consecutive games with a fourth-inning single. Dylan O’Rae also recorded his 54^th stolen base of the season in the third, marking the most by a Brewers Double-A player since Mike Felder recorded 58 in 1984 with the El Paso Diablos.

The series concludes on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m. No starter has been announced for the Shuckers while Connor Schultz (5-4, 4.88) is slated to start for the Smokies. The Shuckers conclude their week with Family Sunday presented by Chicken Salad Chick and Salute to Play-Doh Night.
