Bulls designated hitter Ruben Cardenas extended his hit streak to eight games, while Sounds catcher Patrick Dorian smashed two home runs and shortstop Cam Devanney drove in three runs in support of starting pitcher Robert Gasser’s solid six scoreless frames in Nashville’s 6-0 win over Durham on Friday night at First Horizon Park.
Gasser (6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 10 SO) earned the victory with his six shutout innings of work, adding ten punchouts, with relievers J.B. Bukauskas (1.0 IP, 1 SO) and Eric Lauer (2.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 5 SO) combining for the final three frames. Bulls starter Taj Bradley (2.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) suffered the defeat.
The Sounds surged ahead with a four-run second inning started by Dorrian’s first homer of the night, a solo blast, with Devanney adding a two-run shot before DH Keston Hiura’s RBI double to left. Dorrian would then go deep in the subsequent frame to make it 5-0, an advantage that remained until Devanney drove in his third run of the evening with an RBI single in the eighth.
Dorrian (3-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI) and Devanney (3-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI) each recorded a game-high three hits, with 2B Josh VanMeter (2-4, 1 R) adding a multi-hit effort of his own. Cardenas extended his hit streak to eight with a ninth-inning single. The shutout defeat marked just the second time this year Durham has failed to record a run this season.
With the series even at two games apiece, the two teams are set to continue their six-game set on Saturday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:35pm ET. RHP Nathan Wiles is expected to start for the Bulls and is slated to be opposed by RHP Janson Junk.
Durham returns home to start a 12-game homestand beginning with a six-game series versus the Memphis Redbirds, the Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. First pitch of that series is set for 6:35pm.
