Space Cowboys Storm Back Using An 11-Run Tenth Inning To Even Series

Delgado Drives In Five As Offense Explodes In Extras

Raynel Delgado drove in four runs during an 11-run 10th inning as the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (27-10, 59-52) defeated the Albuquerque Isotopes (18-19, 57-55) 18-10 on Friday night at Isotopes Park in Sugar Land’s 15th extra-inning game of the season.

After neither team could break a 7-7 tie in the eighth or ninth, the Space Cowboys erupted for 11 runs in the top of the 10th. Garrett Guillemette opened the inning with a single to put runners on the corners before Cavan Biggio worked a walk to load the bases. Delgado then connected on his second triple of the season, knocking in three and giving Sugar Land a 10-7 lead. Shay Whitcomb followed with a walk and stole second before Zach Dezenzo singled to left field, driving in two more runs. Dezenzo then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error before Trenton Brooks worked a walk.

Lucas Spence followed with a two-run double to right field, extending the lead to 14-7. Guillemette then singled home another run before Biggio worked his second walk of the inning. Delgado followed with an RBI single, giving him four RBI in the inning and pushing the lead to 16-7. Joey Loperfido then drew a walk to load the bases before Whitcomb and CJ Alexander worked back-to-back walks, bringing home two more runs and giving Sugar Land an 18-7 lead.

RHP Julio Rodriguez allowed three runs in the bottom of the 10th, but RHP Roddery Muñoz entered to collect the last out and secure the 18-10 victory for Sugar Land.

Albuquerque struck first in the bottom of the first. After a single and a walk put two runners aboard, a throwing error scored the first run for the Isotopes. An RBI groundout brought home another run to give the Isotopes an early 2-0 lead. The Isotopes added to their advantage in the third. Two doubles, two hit batters and a walk allowed Albuquerque to plate two more runs and push its lead to 4-0.

The Space Cowboys got on the board in the top of the fourth. Dezenzo was hit by a pitch before Brooks singled to put two runners aboard. Lucas Spence followed with an RBI single to score the first run for Sugar Land, while Guillemette lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring home another run. Delgado then lined an RBI single to right field, extending his RBI streak to six games and cutting the deficit to 4-3.

RHP Michael Knorr provided solid relief for Sugar Land, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings while allowing one hit and one walk. RHP Logan VanWey followed with a scoreless inning of his own, allowing just one hit.

Sugar Land took its first lead of the night in the top of the seventh. Biggio led off with a ground-rule double before Delgado drew a walk and Loperfido was hit by a pitch to load the bases**.** Alexander followed with a two-run single to left field, putting Sugar Land ahead 5-4. Dezenzo was then hit by a pitch to reload the bases before a wild pitch brought home Loperfido. Brooks followed with an RBI single to give the Space Cowboys a 7-4 advantage.

Albuquerque answered in the bottom of the seventh, using four singles and a throwing error to plate three runs and tie the game at 7-7. However, RHP Christian Roa entered with one out and runners on the corners and induced a double play to end the inning, part of 1.2 scoreless innings from the righty that kept the game tied and set the stage for the Space Cowboys comeback.

NOTABLE:

  • The Space Cowboys played their 15th extra-inning game of the season on Friday night, the most in the Pacific Coast League. El Paso ranks second with 12 extra-inning games.
  • Raynel Delgado went 5-for-6 with a triple, five RBI, a walk and three runs scored, extending his RBI streak to six games and his hitting streak to seven games. Delgado has now recorded a multi-hit game in six of his last seven games and is 16-for-31 with four doubles, two triples, 12 RBI, three walks and seven runs scored over that span. His five hits marked a career high and his first game with at least four hits since June 4, when he went 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored as a member of the Durham Bulls against the Charlotte Knights.
  • Delgado’s five-hit night is the first five-hit game for a Space Cowboys’ batter since JJ Matijevic collected five hits on August 8, 2023 at El Paso.
  • CJ Alexander went 2-for-6 with a double, three RBI, a walk and a run scored, extending his RBI streak to five games. Since returning from the injured list on July 30, Alexander has recorded a hit and an RBI in every game, going 7-for-21 with two doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI, three walks and five runs scored.
  • RHP Christian Roa has allowed a run in just two of his 11 appearances since rejoining the Space Cowboys on July 3. During that span, Roa has tossed 12.0 innings, allowing 10 hits and four runs while walking four and striking out 14.
  • After his streak of 15 consecutive scoreless appearances was snapped on August 4 at Albuquerque, RHP Miguel Ullola tossed a scoreless inning on Friday, allowing one hit while striking out one. Ullola has not allowed a run in15 of his last 17 appearances with the Space Cowboys.
  • Garrett Guillemette went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored, recording his second multi-hit game since joining Sugar Land on July 3. Friday marked his first three-hit game with the Space Cowboys and his first three-hit game since June 6, when he went 3-for-4 against Arkansas as a member of the Corpus Christi Hooks.
  • Joey Loperfido went 1-for-4 with two walks and a run scored on Friday night. Loperfido has now reached safely in every game this week, going 4-for-14 with two RBI, five walks and two runs scored.

The Sugar Land Space Cowboys look to take control of the series against the Albuquerque Isotopes on Saturday night. RHP Bryce Mayer takes the mound for Sugar Land, while RHP Mason Adams gets the start for Albuquerque. First pitch is set for 7:35 pm CT.
