On Sunday August 9th, Phillies top pitching prospect Spencer Howard was called up to the major leagues to start game two of a doubleheader. Howard, a 24 year-old right hander, was drafted in the second round in 2017.

Philadelphia fell to the Atlanta Braves 8-0 and Howard took the loss. He pitched 4.2 innings giving up seven hits and four earned runs. In his outing, Howard also struck out four batters and only walked one.

There are lots of positives to look at for this prospect’s first big league start. His fastball velocity was impressive as well as three other off speed pitches. Howard even ignited some anger when he struck out Marcell Ozuna twice.

The former Reading Fightin Phils standout said he was excited about his debut. Howard said he will be sharper next time and is ready to get to work.

Back in 2019, Howard started six games for the R-Phils. He had a 2.35 earned run average with 38 strikeouts.

While originally a starter, Phillies manager Joe Girardi may use Howard out of the bullpen. On a typical week the team has their set starters, but could use some help on the back end. With Howard’s potential and ability, the Phillies pitching staff is falling into place.
