Jupiter, FL - The Palm Beach Cardinals (42-28, 2-1) rallied with three runs late in the game to take a win over the Jupiter Hammerheads (34-37, 1-2) on Saturday evening at Roger Dean Stadium.
Jake Woodford come out with a very gutzy performance for the Cardinals as he went 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out three. He got into a jam early as he gave up a leadoff walk to MLB rehab player, Adeiny Hechavarría, who then got to second on a Kyle Barrett bunt single. Woodford got Angel Reyes to fly out for the first out then ended the inning with runners on the corners with back-to-back strikeouts.
Jeff Brigham got out of trouble in the bottom of the first as well as he gave up a leadoff walk to Darren Seferina. Seferina stole second and got to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Seferina was left at third though as Blake Drake popped out to first, Randy Arozarena popped out to short and Danny Diekroeger grounded out to end the threat.
Jupiter jumped out to a two run lead in the top of the second. Brad Haynal hit a double down the right field line and was brought in with a Brian Schales double to make it a 1-0 game. Hechavarria then hit a ground ball through the left side to make it 2-0 at the end of the second.
Palm Beach responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Thomas Spitz led off with a single and was followed up with a single off the bat of Andy Young. Leobaldo Pina advanced both runners on a sacrifice bunt. Austin Wilson drove Spitz in on a ground out to score Palm Beach's first run of the game. José Godoy hit a double in the right field corner to drive in Young and tie the game at 2.
The tie was broken in the top of the fifth as John Silviano took Woodford deep over the left field wall to give Jupiter the 3-2 lead with two outs in the inning.
Woodford got into another jam in the sixth inning giving up a two out single to Schales and walked Corey Bass. Dann Bilardello went to Jacob Evans with two outs in the frame. Evans got Hechavarria to fly out to right to end the threat.
Evans tossed a scoreless seventh as well to give Palm Beach the chance to come back in the seventh. Spitz led off the inning with a double to left and got to third on an error by the left fielder as he bobbled the ball. Young walked to put runners at the corners. Pina struck out for the first out of the seventh, but Young stole second to put runners at second and third for Austin Wilson. Jupiter went to reliever Ryan Beckman and Wilson hit a ground ball to shortstop to drive in Spitz. Seferina hit a double through the right side to bring Young home and give the Cardinals the 4-1 lead.
Palm Beach added another run in the eighth as Randy Arozarena hit a single up the middle to start the frame and got to second on a Diekroeger bunt. Spitz recorded his third hit of the night driving in Arozarena to give the Cardinals the insurance run and a 5-3 lead.
Estarlin Arias pitched a perfect ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts to record his third save of the season.
