Squirrels spin second shutout of series against SeaWolves

Frisbee, Gates combine for eight scoreless innings in 2-0 Richmond win

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Flying Squirrels shut out the Erie SeaWolves, 2-0, on Friday night at The Diamond.

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Flying Squirrels shut out the Erie SeaWolves, 2-0, on Friday night at The Diamond.

The Flying Squirrels (24-25) picked up their second shutout win of this week’s series against the SeaWolves (26-21).

Matt Frisbee started and threw 4.2 scoreless innings before leaving with an apparent injury in the top of the fifth inning. He finished his outing with four strikeouts.

Evan Gates (Win, 2-1) took over for Frisbee in the fifth and threw a career-high 3.1 innings, striking out four. Tyler Myrick (Save, 4) worked around a leadoff single to close the game out in the ninth.

The Flying Squirrels scored both of their runs in the third inning. Dilan Rosario drove an RBI triple and came in to score on an RBI single by Carter Howell against SeaWolves starter Carlos Pena (Loss, 0-2).

The SeaWolves scattered seven hits in the first four innings before going hitless until the ninth. In the second, Jake Holton led off with a double but was thrown out by Allen Cerda trying to advance to third on a fly out.

In the third, Erie put runners on first and second with no outs, but Frisbee worked a flyout from Carlos Mendoza and Hao-Yu Lee grounded into a double play to end the inning.

After issuing a walk to the first batter he faced, Gates retired the next 10 batters in order to finish his outing.

The Flying Squirrels and SeaWolves continue the series on Saturday night at The Diamond. Right-hander Ryan Murphy (1-3, 3.18) will start for Richmond opposed by Erie right-hander Wilkel Hernandez (1-1, 4.26). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.

Saturday is Flying Squirrels Prom presented by Markel and fans are invited to dance in the outfield pregame from 5:15-5:45 p.m. (no heels, please). Fans can bring new or gently used prom dresses, shoes or accessories and receive to free general admission ticket. In-Your-Face Fireworks follow the game.
