Squirrels win in extras to take series over Baysox
BOWIE, Md. – The Richmond Flying Squirrels beat the Chesapeake Baysox, 6-5, in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon at Prince George’s Stadium to close their two-week road trip.

The Flying Squirrels (70-48, 27-23 second half) picked up their first series win since June and their first road series win since April, taking four-of-six against the Baysox (56-62, 27-23).

With the score tied, 3-3, entering the 10th inning, Dayson Croes bunted and reached on a fielder’s choice to put runners at first and second with two outs against Baysox reliever Brock Moore (Loss, 0-1). Sabin Ceballos moved the Flying Squirrels in front with an RBI single.

Later in the top of the 10th, Charlie Szykowny hit an RBI single and Ceballos scored on a sacrifice fly by Maui Ahuna to open a 6-3 Richmond lead.
In the bottom of the 10th, Thomas Sosa drove a two-out, two-run single to pull the Baysox within a run, but Marques Johnson (Save, 2) struck out Frederick Bencosme to end the game.
Tyler Vogel (Win, 9-2) worked a scoreless bottom of the ninth to force extras. Along with leading the Eastern League with 15 saves, he is now tied for second in the circuit in wins.

Facing rehabbing Baltimore Orioles pitcher Felix Bautista, the Flying Squirrels took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with one out and Lisbel Diaz followed with a bases-loaded walk to force home the first run.

Reliever Tyson Neighbors entered and walked Ahuna with the bases loaded to drive in a second run. Jancel Villarroel plated the third run with a sacrifice fly.
The Baysox cut the score to 3-1 in the second with a double steal. In the bottom of the fifth, Wehiwa Aloy and Aron Estrada hit back-to-back solo homers to tie the score, 3-3.
Richmond starter Greg Farone threw 5.1 innings and allowed three runs with six strikeouts.
Ryan Vanderhei recorded three outs in a scoreless appearance. In 16 outings since June 20, he is 2-0 with a 0.42 (ERA 1 ER/21.1 IP).
RJ Dabovich recorded two outs to close the seventh inning. Manuel Mercedes stranded two runners on base in the eighth for his third consecutive scoreless outing.
The Flying Squirrels remained undefeated in their 10 extra-inning games this season.
Richmond picked up its first series win since taking five-of-six over Akron at CarMax Park from June 23-28. They have split five-of-seven sets since then. It was also the team’s first road series win since going 4-1 at Hartford from April 14-18. Richmond has won eight series this season, split 10 and lost three.
On their two-week, 12-game road trip, the Flying Squirrels posted a 7-5 record.
The Baysox dropped to 7.5 games behind first-place Erie in the Southwest Division’s second-half standings with three weeks remaining in the regular season. The Flying Squirrels will face the division’s second-half champion in the first round of the Eastern League playoffs in September.
The Flying Squirrels open a six-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, on Tuesday night. Right-hander Trystan Vrieling (5-2, 4.26) will start for Richmond. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at CarMax Park.
