PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (July 19, 2017) - The Charlotte Stone Crabs led 6-1 after six innings Wednesday, but allowed six unanswered runs in a 7-6 loss to the Tampa Yankees in 13 innings at Charlotte Sports Park.
The Stone Crabs (44-49, 13-12) allowed singular runs in the seventh and eighth innings, entering the top of the ninth with a 6-3 lead.
After Charlotte reliever Dalton Moats retired the first batter, Tim Lynch and Daniel Barrios both singled to put runners at first and second. After a flyout brought the Stone Crabs one out away from the win, Yankees (53-42, 14-11) shortstop Angel Aguilar launched a three-run home run to left field to tie the game at six.
With the game still tied in the top of the 13th, Nick Solak tripled to center before Gosuke Katoh drove him in with a double, giving the Yankees a 7-6 lead.
Raynel Espinal then put down the Stone Crabs in order to earn the save. Stephen Tarpley (3-0) worked four shutout innings of relief to earn the win for Tampa.
Stone Crabs starting pitcher Eduar Lopez turned in seven innings of two-run ball. He left with a 6-2 lead but wound up with a no decision.
Charlotte was paced offensively by Brandon Lowe and Ryan Boldt , each of whom notched two hits and two RBI.
The Stone Crabs will take a second crack at the series win Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. Charlotte turns to Tyler Brashears (3-3, 4.79), while the Yankees start Dillon Tate (4-0, 3.00). Coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
