PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (April 15, 2019) - The Charlotte Stone Crabs let an early lead get away Monday, giving up five runs in the final three innings to lose 6-1 to the Dunedin Blue Jays at Charlotte Sports Park.
The Stone Crabs (3-9) are now 0-5 in games in which they score first. Monday's defeat extends Charlotte's losing streak to six games, their longest slide since May 17-23, 2017.
In a scoreless game in the bottom of the third, Stone Crabs third baseman Tyler Frank lined a single to center. While attempting to steal second, Vidal Brujan ripped a double to the right field corner, chasing home Frank to give the Stone Crabs a 1-0 lead.
With Charlotte leading 1-0 in the fourth, Riley Adams and Christian Williams both walked to start the inning against Stone Crabs starter Tommy Romero . A Demi Orimoloye flyout then advanced Adams to third. With runners at the corners and one out, Norberto Obeso grounded into a fielder's choice, plating Adams to make it 1-1.
With the game still tied in the top of the seventh, Orimoloye lined a double to left to start the inning. After Mikey York retired the next two batters, Brujan committed a fielding error to allow Orimoloye to score and give Dunedin a 2-1 lead.
Still up by that margin in the top of the eighth, Cullen Large doubled before Adams walked with one out. The next batter was Christian Williams, who singled to right to plate Large and extend the lead to 3-1. Russ Olive then committed an error on a pickoff attempt, allowing Adams to come in and make it 4-1.
The Blue Jays tacked on two more runs in the ninth on a Samad Taylor home run and a Ryan Noda single to claim the contest 6-1.
The Stone Crabs will look to snap their losing streak against Dunedin at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Coverage begins at 6:15 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
