CLEARWATER, Fla. (June 6, 2017) - Peter Bourjos homered and Michael Velasquez made a successful return from the disabled list, but the Charlotte Stone Crabs lost 6-1 to the Clearwater Threshers in Tuesday's series finale at Spectrum Field.
In a scoreless game in the top of the third, the rehabbing Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Bourjos clobbered a line-drive home run to left to give the Stone Crabs (27-29) a 1-0 lead.
Still leading by one in the bottom of the fourth, the Threshers (33-26) mounted a two-out rally against Charlotte righty Taylor Hawkins (1-4). After a Cornelius Randolph walk, Deivi Grullon smacked a two-run home run to left to give Clearwater a 2-1 lead. Grenny Cumana then singled and stole second before Cord Sandberg singled to center to extend the Threshers' lead to 3-1. The next batter was Emmanuel Marrero, who banked an RBI triple off the right field wall to make the count 4-1.
That was all Threshers starter Alberto Tirado (4-3) would need. The Dominican right-hander twirled seven innings of one-run baseball, allowing only five hits and one walk while fanning six.
Stone Crabs southpaw Michael Velasquez worked two scoreless innings in his return from the disabled list. The Texas native missed nearly a month with a shoulder injury, but looked sharp Tuesday.
The Stone Crabs will enjoy an off-day Wednesday before opening a four-game series at home against the Florida Fire Frogs. Coverage of Thursday's game begins at 6:20 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
