COLUMBUS, Ga., — On a night where everything was going right for the Columbus Clingstones' (11-12, 37-52) pitching staff, the bats failed to get anything going in a 1-0 loss to the Chattanooga Lookouts (11-11, 49-39) on Wednesday night at Synovus Park. The Stones were held to just four base runners all game.
Decisive Plays: Chattanooga scored the first, and last, run of the game in the opening half of the first inning. Edwin Arroyo mashed a leadoff double and Leo Balcazar roped one into center field to force an error and bring Arroyo home. Rolddy Muñoz punched out two of the next three batters he faced to limit the damage. In the second inning, Muñoz escaped a bases-loaded jam to hold the deficit to one. Neither offense could find any production the rest of the game.
Key Contributors: Brian Moran (3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 SO) set a new career-high in strikeouts and tied his longest outing of the season, last set on June 20 against Birmingham. Blane Abeyta recorded a season-high five strikeouts over two innings of relief.
Notable: The Clingstones were shut out for the 13th time this season with the 1-0 loss on Wednesday night. The last time Columbus was shut out was in its 1-0 loss to Pensacola on July 10. Columbus is now 1-5 in contests that finish with a 1-0 final. Moran set a new career-high with seven strikeouts in Wednesday night's game, surpassing his previous mark of six that he reached twice in his career (once in 2017 and once in 2012). Abeyta set a new season-high with five strikeouts, surpassing his previous best of four that he also set against Chattanooga on May 31.
